Can Stress Cause Restless Legs? Why Your Legs Will Not Settle

← Back to the blog

Stress is not known to directly cause restless legs syndrome, but it can make the restless feeling louder. Stress keeps your nervous system on alert, disrupts sleep, and often pairs with more caffeine, all of which can turn up symptoms. Restless legs can also come from iron deficiency, pregnancy, or medicines, so please see your physician.

What do restless legs feel like?

If you have felt it, you know. You finally lie down, and your legs start buzzing with a need to move. MedlinePlus describes restless legs syndrome as a powerful urge to move your legs, often when you are lying down or sitting. People call it creeping, crawling, tingling, or burning. Moving brings relief, but not for long, and it can make it hard to fall asleep and stay asleep.

What do restless legs feel like?

I want to say this first: you are not imagining it, and you are not being dramatic. Your body is telling you something, and it deserves to be heard.

Can anxiety and stress make restless legs worse?

Many people notice that their legs are worse during heavy seasons. That makes sense. A stressed nervous system stays on watch, and a body on watch has a hard time settling into rest. Stress also tends to cut sleep short, and tired bodies often feel everything more.

Can anxiety and stress make restless legs worse?

Then there is the coffee. When we are stretched thin, we reach for caffeine to get through the afternoon. MedlinePlus notes that caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol may make restless legs symptoms worse. So stress can work on your legs from more than one direction.

If your nights are already restless, you may also find my post on why you cannot fall asleep at night helpful.

What else can cause restless legs?

This part matters. MedlinePlus explains that in most cases there is no known cause, and in other cases restless legs are linked to a condition such as anemia or pregnancy. Some medicines can also cause temporary symptoms.

What else can cause restless legs?

That is why I never want stress to become the easy answer that keeps someone from a simple blood test. Your physician can check things like iron levels and review your medicines. Please do not start iron supplements on your own, because too much iron can cause its own problems.

Is it restless legs or muscle twitching?

They can feel related, but they are different. Restless legs is mostly an urge to move that eases when you move. Twitching is a small flicker in the muscle that you did not choose. MedlinePlus also notes that many people with restless legs have leg movements during sleep, which a partner may notice before you do.

Is it restless legs or muscle twitching?

If the flickering is more your experience, I wrote about whether stress can cause muscle twitching.

How can you calm restless legs at night, gently?

MedlinePlus lists regular sleep habits, relaxation techniques, and moderate exercise during the day as lifestyle changes that can help. Here is how I like to put that into practice:

How can you calm restless legs at night, gently?
  • Keep a steady bedtime. Your body loves rhythm.
  • Move earlier in the day. A walk in daylight beats a late, hard workout.
  • Watch the afternoon caffeine. Try ending it by lunch for a week and notice.
  • Give your legs a bedtime ritual. A warm bath, a gentle calf stretch, or a slow foot massage.
  • Let your nervous system stand down. A long exhale or a short prayer tells your body the day is done.

When should you see a doctor about restless legs?

Please make an appointment if restless legs keep you from sleeping, show up most nights, or started after a new medicine or during pregnancy. Your physician can check for causes like iron deficiency and talk with you about options. Keep taking any prescribed medication as directed, and ask before you stop or change anything.

When should you see a doctor about restless legs?

Seek urgent care for sudden leg swelling, warmth, or pain in one leg, or sudden weakness.

Pause for Reflection

Tonight, before you lie down, rest your hands on your legs for a moment.

Pause for Reflection

These legs have carried you through every hard season you have walked. What would it feel like to thank them, instead of fighting them?

"When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet" (Proverbs 3:24, KJV). Your body is allowed to rest.
