How Do You Support Your Adrenals Naturally?

← Back to the blog

You support your adrenals naturally by reducing the demand on them before adding anything. That means real rest, steady meals so blood sugar stops swinging, water and minerals, daylight early and dimness late, and fewer things asking for urgency. Adaptogenic herbs can help, chosen for your picture, after the load has been lightened.

What do the adrenal glands actually do?

They sit directly on top of the kidneys, small and easy to overlook, and they produce the hormones that run your response to demand. Cortisol and adrenaline are the well-known ones. Cortisol is not a villain. It lifts you out of bed in the morning, holds your blood sugar steady between meals and manages inflammation. The kidneys underneath filter waste, balance fluid and minerals, and hold blood pressure steady. The Cleveland Clinic's overview of the adrenal glands is a clear place to read the anatomy for yourself.

What do the adrenal glands actually do?

The system was designed for bursts. Run, resolve, recover. It was never designed for a decade of low-grade vigilance with no recovery written in.

Is adrenal fatigue a real diagnosis?

Here I want to be careful with you, because this is where the internet gets loud.

Is adrenal fatigue a real diagnosis?

Adrenal fatigue is not a recognised medical diagnosis. There are recognised conditions of adrenal function, including adrenal insufficiency and Addison's disease, and those are serious, diagnosable and treatable by a physician. The NIDDK explains adrenal insufficiency, worth reading if your symptoms are significant.

What is real is the exhaustion people are describing when they reach for that phrase. Flat mornings. A second wind at ten at night. Salt cravings. Being tired in a way that sleep does not touch. That pattern is common in people who have carried long seasons of hypervigilance, and it deserves to be taken seriously rather than renamed and sold to.

Your experience is real. The label is what is contested.

Why does chronic fear wear on this system?

Because the stress response cannot tell the difference between a genuine emergency and a life arranged so that everything feels like one.

Why does chronic fear wear on this system?

A childhood where you watched the room to know if it was safe. A family line where money or instability meant someone always had to be alert. Work that never truly closes. The glands respond faithfully every time, and faithfulness with no recovery period is depletion. Older frameworks placed fear with the kidneys and called that region the seat of inherited constitutional energy. Whatever language you prefer, the observation holds: fear that is inherited rather than chosen runs the same machinery.

This is often what sits underneath being wired but tired, and it is why rest can feel so strangely unavailable. A body that believes vigilance is what keeps it safe will not hand rest over just because you booked it. The same pattern traced across every system is what I write about in Nothing Missing, Nothing Broken.

You are not lazy. You have been on duty.

Begin with subtraction. The most common mistake is adding a protocol on top of an already full system.

How do you support the adrenals naturally?

Genuine rest, not just less activity. Horizontal, unstimulated, unproductive rest. If that makes you uncomfortable, feeling guilty for resting is about exactly that.

Eat before you are desperate. Blood sugar crashes recruit the stress hormones. Protein at breakfast, meals that do not get skipped, something before a workout.

Water and minerals. The kidneys are managing fluid and electrolytes. Plain water all day, and do not be afraid of good salt on real food unless your physician has said otherwise.

Light in the morning, dimness at night. Ten minutes of daylight early does more for your cortisol rhythm than most supplements.

Move gently while you are depleted. Walking, swimming, easy strength work. High-intensity training in a depleted season often digs the hole deeper.

Reduce the number of urgent things. Not everything that is loud is urgent. Some of the load is genuinely removable.

Adaptogenic herbs such as ashwagandha and rhodiola have their place, and that place is with a practitioner who knows your thyroid, your medications and your constitution. That is a large part of hormone balance support, where the stress response and the hormonal picture are never separate files.

When should you see a doctor?

Please see your physician if you have persistent severe fatigue, unexplained weight loss, dizziness on standing, very low blood pressure, darkening of the skin, nausea and vomiting, or muscle weakness. These can indicate adrenal insufficiency, which is diagnosed with blood tests and treated medically. Thyroid conditions, anaemia, sleep apnoea and depression also produce deep fatigue and are worth ruling out.

When should you see a doctor?

Work like mine sits alongside that care, never in place of it.

Pause for reflection

Sit down, put both feet flat on the floor, and rest a hand low on your back where the kidneys sit. Let one exhale go all the way out.

Pause for reflection

Ask gently: what am I still watching for that is no longer happening? And what would it take for my body to believe the emergency has passed?

"Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). Rest as something given, not something earned.

You are not broken. You have been carrying a long watch, and you are allowed to be tired.

FAQ

What are the signs your adrenals need support?

Commonly described patterns include waking unrefreshed, an afternoon dip, a second wind late at night, salt cravings and shakiness when meals are late. None are diagnostic on their own, and each has other possible causes worth ruling out with a doctor.

Can you test for adrenal fatigue?

There is no validated test for adrenal fatigue, because it is not a recognised diagnosis. There are validated tests for adrenal insufficiency and for thyroid function, and those are the ones a physician will use to find a measurable cause for deep fatigue.

How long does it take to recover from burnout?

Longer than most people want to hear, and it depends on how long the season lasted. Recovery arrives in layers. Removing demand usually does more, faster, than adding anything.

Where should I start?

Start with breakfast that includes protein and ten minutes of morning daylight. When you would like support shaped around your own history, you can start a conversation through the contact page.
