It Is Not Mine to Carry: How to Surrender Your Burdens

← Back to the blog

Somewhere along the way, most of us signed up to be the structural support of our own universe. Nobody remembers filling out the application.

Learning how to surrender your burdens to God begins with one honest question: whose weight is this, really? True surrender is not passive; it is an active repositioning of the soul, the moment you stop bracing and allow the Creator to take His rightful place. And when you do, your biology follows. Cortisol drops, your nervous system shifts out of emergency mode, and your body can finally begin to repair.

I've noticed a pattern in my own life lately: whenever I find myself feeling completely overwhelmed by the "crazy" all around me, the noise of the world, the chaos in the headlines, or the frantic pace of the day, it is a signal. It's the warning light on the dashboard of my heart telling me that I have, once again, started carrying what doesn't belong to me.

In those moments, I've learned that the most powerful thing I can do is stop. As an act of surrender and worship, I purposely step aside from the noise to search for what is really happening in my soul. I have to ask: What did I pick up when I wasn't looking? And whose weight is this, really?

What Does It Mean to Truly Surrender?

True surrender is an active repositioning of the soul. It is the moment you stop trying to be the structural support of your own universe and allow the Creator to take His rightful place.

Surrender happens in the deepest part of your being. It is the internal "click" where the soul stops bracing for impact and begins to lean into Grace. It is the transition from holding to being held. It is obeying the command to:

"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." 1 Peter 5:7

What Happens in Your Body When You Surrender?

When we surrender, we aren't just changing our minds; we are changing our biology. God designed our bodies to flourish in peace, not to survive in a constant state of "emergency." When we "step aside and search," a profound physiological shift occurs, a biological "Amen."

From Cortisol to Connection

When we carry weights not meant for us, our bodies stay flooded with cortisol and adrenaline. This is the "fight or flight" mode. It raises our blood pressure, shallows our breath, and shuts down our ability to think deeply. It is "crushing" in a literal, physical sense.

The moment we truly lay the burden down, our nervous system switches from the Sympathetic (stress) to the Parasympathetic (rest and digest) branch.

The Hormone Shift: As cortisol drops, your body begins to release oxytocin (the "connection" hormone) and dopamine. You move from fear-based survival to faith-based connection.

The Healing Response: With the "alarm" turned off, your body can finally divert energy back to your immune system, digestion, and cellular repair.

Surrender is, quite literally, medicine for your bones. "This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones." Proverbs 3:8

Which Burdens Were Never Yours to Carry?

We rarely pick up one giant weight. We pick up specific, familiar ones. Here are three I see most often.

The Burden of Being the Savior

We absorb the chaos of others, believing our love can fix their brokenness.

The Scripture: "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." Psalm 147:3
The Truth: Jesus does the healing; we do the loving. We must step aside so the True Physician can work.

The Weight of Unwritten Futures

We hold tomorrow with white-knuckled fear, as if our vigilance keeps the world spinning.

The Scripture: "Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?" Luke 12:25
The Truth: Control is an illusion. His sovereignty is steadier than your striving.

The Ghost of "Not Enough"

The fear that if we don't hold it all together, we have no value.

The Scripture: "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." 2 Corinthians 12:9
The Truth: Enoughness is His job; faithfulness is yours.

How Do You Practice Letting Go?

Step Aside and Search: When the "crazy" feels too loud, withdraw. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the specific weight you've picked up. Name it. Then lay it down, on purpose, as an act of surrender and worship.

If the weight you are carrying has started to show up in your body, in your sleep, your digestion, or a nervous system that will not settle, that is exactly the kind of pattern I work with. FAQ

What does it mean to surrender your burdens to God?

True surrender is an active repositioning of the soul, not a passive giving up. It is the moment you stop trying to be the structural support of your own universe and allow the Creator to take His rightful place. It is the internal click where the soul stops bracing for impact and begins to lean into Grace.

What happens in your body when you surrender?

Your nervous system switches from the Sympathetic (stress) branch to the Parasympathetic (rest and digest) branch. As cortisol drops, your body begins to release oxytocin and dopamine, and energy returns to your immune system, digestion, and cellular repair. Research on the stress response, such as Harvard Health's overview of chronic stress, describes the same fight-or-flight physiology.

Why do I keep picking my burdens back up?

Usually because a deeper script is running: the belief that your love must fix others, that your vigilance keeps the world spinning, or that holding it all together is what gives you value. Naming which specific weight you have picked up is the first step in laying it down again.

How do I know I am carrying something that is not mine?

Feeling completely overwhelmed by the noise around you is a signal, a warning light on the dashboard of the heart. Stop, step aside from the noise, and ask: What did I pick up when I was not looking? The full passage behind this practice is 1 Peter 5:7.
